Where the figures come from, how old they can be, what each one means, and what FinTk does not cover.
FinTk does not produce market data. It reads it from the sources below and shows it as published. “How old” is the longest a stored copy is used before it is read again.
| Source | What it provides | How old |
|---|---|---|
| CoinMarketCap (opens in a new tab) | Coin prices, market capitalization, 24-hour trading volume, supply, reported price changes, market totals and the Fear and Greed index. | Prices and totals up to 10 minutes. Fear and Greed up to 1 hour. The two prices behind year-to-date and past-year changes up to 12 hours. |
| SEC (opens in a new tab) | Press releases, and Form 8-K filings from EDGAR for a short, fixed list of crypto companies. | Up to 15 minutes. |
| CFTC (opens in a new tab) | Press releases and enforcement releases. | Up to 15 minutes. |
| U.S. Department of Justice (opens in a new tab) | Press releases. | Up to 15 minutes. |
For how CoinMarketCap builds its own figures, read CoinMarketCap's methodology (opens in a new tab).
The news page shows announcements from the SEC, the CFTC and the Department of Justice when the headline contains a crypto-related word or phrase, plus Form 8-K filings from a short, fixed list of crypto companies over the last 90 days.
Headlines are the publishers' own words and dates, newest first. Nothing is ranked, summarized or rewritten, and a story is not featured for any reason other than being the newest. If a source cannot be reached, the page names it.
The exact word list and company list are printed on the news page, under “How items are chosen”, so you can always see the rule that is in use.
Prices can be up to about 10 minutes old. If a refresh fails, an older copy is shown for up to an hour, and the “updated” time on the page tells you how old it is. After that the page says the data is unavailable.
FinTk reads the 200 largest coins by market capitalization. The markets page lists 25 of them. Coin pages and search cover the 200. A smaller coin will not be found.
Only the change over each period is shown. There are no charts of daily prices, because the data plan does not include them.
If a figure is not available, the page says so. It is never replaced with an estimate or an old value.
All prices and values are in US dollars.
Market data is kept only briefly in memory to avoid asking the provider again. It is not archived. What you save, your holdings and watchlist, is stored with your account until you delete it.
FinTk is for personal, non-commercial research. Nothing on it is investment advice, and data can be delayed, incomplete or briefly unavailable.
Market data is provided by CoinMarketCap.com (opens in a new tab). Announcements and filings are published by the SEC, the CFTC and the U.S. Department of Justice. FinTk is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
